Inspiration for my sister's lawn

2019-09-17

At the cemetery we passed some new flower beds (in pic) and got in to it, cause it was beautiful, so I am now out to find some inspiration, for a similar flower bed, but in the middle of her lawn - a full sun flowerbed in white and green shades. My sister is not into "wild" gardens, as her daughter is, she likes a well-groomed garden, then you just have to give the well-groomed garden value to insects through the plant selection, so my sister can get the garden she wish for. To me a niiice challenge.

Our municipality is in the process of introducing a lot more biodiversity into the green areas and is experimenting with this part, on several different plans, this flowerbed being just one of them.

One of the plants in the flower bed was a white showy stonecrop (Hylotelephium spectabile) Sedum spectabile 'Stardust' (or Hylotelephium spectabile 'Stardust') I think - the one in the next pic with the European peacock butterfly

Tall sedum - a pollinator's dream plant

In late summer months, tall sedum begins to bloom, attracting a plethora of pollinators and beneficials to its flowers. The nectar rich flowers are borne on large, flat flower heads which allow for resting of insects looking for a snack. There can be literally hundred of bees, butterflies, and others on each plant, and if you have several plants-sit back and enjoy the show.

White Hedgehog Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) - Echinacea purpurea 'White Swan'

The flower are hermaphroditic, having both male and female organs in each flower. It is pollinated by butterflies and bees.

Flowering is from July to September. The plant prefers well-drained soils in full sun.

Geranium Sanguineum 'Album' -  Bloody Cranesbill 'Album' (White flowers)

Pollinators plants. This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.

Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea)

Is a host plant for two "ladies". Caterpillars of American lady (Vanessa virginiensis) and painted lady (Vanessa cardui)

Dense blazing star -  Liatris spicata

Common varieties include 'Alba' and 'Floristan White' which are white-flowering cultivars. Liatris spicata is excellent for attracting pollinators and beneficial insects. These include butterflies. The flowers attract bumblebees, digger bees (Anthophorini), long-horned bees (Melissodes spp.), leaf-cutting bees (Megachile spp.) and skippers.

Japanese Anemone

Not so long ago I bought an Japanese anemone 'Honorine Jobert' (white) for my sister, for her new flowerbed, it is just a really pretty flower, that light up any garden.

Late show

Sedum has to be one of the most diverse plant groups in the garden or landscape. From low-growing, colorful ground covers to the upright, stately 'Autumn Joy' sedum, their blossoms are intoxicating for many bees and flies. These late-season bloomers help extend the available pollen and nectar along with garden favorites including Japanese anemone and Rudbeckia 'Autumn Sun.'
